Here is an uncomfortable truth about your CV: the first read is not a read. It is a scan, and it lasts about six or seven seconds. In that time a recruiter decides which pile you go in. Worse, on a lot of roles your CV has to get past screening software first — and a large share are filtered out before a person ever sees them.
So your sales CV has two audiences: a machine looking for the right words, and a human giving you six seconds. Most CVs are built for neither. Here is how to fix that.
Lead with a number, high up
You sell for a living — your CV should open like you know how to. The top third of page one is the only real estate that reliably gets seen on that first scan. Put your strongest, most relevant proof there: quota attainment, a marquee deal, a ranking. “Consistent 130%+ quota attainment across three years; closed the largest new-logo deal in the region (£1.2m).” That is a reason to keep reading. “Responsible for managing a sales territory” is not.
Achievements, not duties
The most common mistake on a sales CV is describing the job instead of your results in it. “Responsible for new business development” tells me nothing — everyone in the pile was responsible for that. What did you do? By how much, against what target, in what time? Numbers are the whole game in sales, and a sales CV without them reads as someone who did not hit any.
Tailor it to the role — every time
This is the one that changes outcomes. A single CV sent to every job forces the reader to work out why you fit. In a full inbox, they will not bother. Tailoring means reordering your experience so the most relevant sits first, and rewording your achievements in the language the ad actually uses — “new business” if they say new business, “account management” if they say that.
It is not dishonest and it is not a rewrite of who you are. It is presenting the true, most relevant version of you for that specific role. Candidates who tailor consistently get materially more interviews than those who do not — it is the closest thing to a cheat code in the whole process.
Tailor your CV before you apply
We built Job Search Bud for exactly this — paste in your CV and the job ad, and in under a minute you get a CV rewritten for that specific role plus a personalised interview prep pack. It only ever uses what is genuinely on your CV. Your first one is free.

Screening systems match on keywords, structure and role-specific language. Keep the layout clean and standard — no text buried in images or fancy columns that a parser will scramble. Mirror the important terms from the job ad where they are genuinely true of you. You are not gaming it; you are making sure the machine can read what is already there.
Ignore anything promising an “ATS score” out of a hundred. There are dozens of these systems and they all work differently, so no external tool can tell you a real number. The useful work is the language and structure, not a vanity metric.
The quickest way to do all of this
Doing this by hand for every application is an hour a time, which is why almost nobody does it — and why the people who do stand out. If you would rather not, the tool above does exactly this in under a minute: reorders and rewords your real experience for the specific job, gets the structure and keywords right for the software, and never invents anything that is not already on your CV.
Your experience is probably good enough. The way it is presented is what is costing you interviews. Fix the six seconds and you change the whole search.
